Home Health Services

Okija home health specializes in home care for veterans throughout Portland and the surrounding areas

Seniors who have served in the armed forces are eligible for a useful benefit known as the veterans’ home care program. Elderly veterans receive assistance with the activities of daily living, which allows them to age in the comfort of home. Eligible veterans and spouses must meet certain criteria.

As veterans grow older, like other seniors, they will require some level of assistance with daily activities. The majority of the elderly, including veterans, prefer to age in place rather than enter a nursing home or assisted living facility. Veteran home care helps them fulfill these wishes.

Caring for Veterans

Veteran home care may be divided into two distinct categories: 1)Homemaking and 2)Home health assistance

Home Care

Homemaking services involve basic, non-medical support, such as assistance with personal hygiene tasks. Along with help with grooming, bathing and dressing, a homemaking professional will do laundry, prepare meals, perform light household chores and run errands. The professional serves as a companion and can help with pet or plant care.

Home health assistance.

Home health assistance professionals are licensed and have received training to do their job. These professionals engage in all the duties of a homemaking professional, but also perform a wide range of skilled services to ensure the well-being of the veterans in their care.

The home health assistance caregiver will monitor the veteran’s mood, level of hydration, meals and exercise regimens. A veteran who needs help with mobility will be accommodated. These professionals also facilitate communications between the veterans, their families and healthcare providers.

Additional home health professionals may be necessary to help the veteran with ongoing healthcare needs. Speech therapists help veterans recover from a stroke. Especially after a surgery, home health nurses and physical therapists will be useful and become part of the veteran’s healthcare team.
